Templates displayed with 0K file size due to being saved in XLSTART.
Cause:
This behavior is because the templates are being saved in the XLSTART folder. The XLSTART folder exists to allow Excel 7.0 to be compatible with Excel 5.0. The folder can be used to save templates. However, when those templates are viewed in the 'New' dialog box in Excel 7.0, they are displayed with 0k file size and cannot be previewed.
Solution:
Move all the existing templates or save all the new templates to the TEMPLATES subfolder under the MICROSOFT OFFICE folder.
1) If the template already exists, move it to the TEMPLATES subfolder under the MICROSOFT OFFICE folder:
a) Open 'Windows Explorer':
1] Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
Start menu
2] Select 'Programs' from the menu. (A submenu appears.)
3] Select 'Windows Explorer' from the submenu. (The Exploring window appears.)
b) Select the template to be moved.
1] (Optional) Select (click) the C drive on the left-hand side of the window.
2] Select (click) the MICROSOFT OFFICE folder. (The folder opens and a list of files and subfolders appears on the right-hand side of the window.)
3] Open (double-click) the EXCEL subfolder. (A list of files and subfolders within the EXCEL subfolder appears.)
4] Open (double-click) the XLSTART subfolder.
5] Select (click) the template. (The template is highlighted.)

d) Select (click) the TEMPLATES subfolder on the left-hand side of the window. (A list of files and subfolders appears on the right-hand side of the window.)
e) (Optional) Open (double-click) the subfolder where the template is to be moved.

b) Type a name for the template in the 'File name' drop-down list box.
c) Select 'Template (*.xlt)' from the 'Save as type' drop-down list. (The TEMPLATES subfolder appears in the 'Save in' drop-down list box, and all the subfolders within the subfolder appear in the middle of the Save As dialog box.)
